Brick by Brick

On Friday, March 18th , We had a special visitor, Mr. Bakshi .come to our meeting. No one knew who he was at first, but soon we were very glad that he came. Mr. Bakshi read the article about our club and project and  he was so impressed that he wanted to donate the rest of the money, that we needed to build the school in India.   He presented us with a check of $1369.15 on behalf of the the Janta Sewak Society. One of the society members also came with him to give this check to us. The money that Mr. Bakshi donated was the final touch to our goal of $8500.00

Our Me to We group started this project in April  last year and we finally completed our goal! Mr. Bakshi says that we should be grateful we have school to go to and he also said that we should take care of the community because it will be better for further generations. We are very happy that our hard work finally paid off.   We  hope to help supply the school after we build it.

Thank you to everyone who donated money! Below we have some pictures of when Mr. Bakshi came.

Our volunteer committee organized  us to volunteer to play with the preschool at Sunset Community Center. On Saturday March 19th it will be  our last day of volunteering. This is our second volunteering project after the soup kitchen at the church.  Thank you committe members!  We enjoyed ourselves and gave back to the community.

The local committee is planning to do another project for Covenant House. We already did two projects for Covenant House. The first project we did was to collect toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner for the youth. For our second project which was about a month ago, we collected toques and gloves because it was very cold and we thought that the youth at Covenant House would need more warm clothes. This time the local committee is planning to have a movie night to raise money for Covenant House. We will let you know when the movie night will take place after spring break.

Komalpreet will be ordering bamboo t-shirts for our group. These t-shirts will be electric blue with the slogan "Be the Change" written on them.  Please email Komalpreet if you want your own t-shirt.

Me to We meeting

On Sunday, March 6th, Jerrica from the volunteer committee went to a Me to We youth summit in downtown Vancouver. She met a lot of children her age that wanted to change the world. Jerrica was the only one from our district that went to the Summit. She said that some people from Victoria took the ferry just to come to this Summit.  While Jerrica was there she learned a lot about helping the world. For example, she learned about water conservation and how much water we all use every day. Jerrica had a great time and she got to meet a lot of wonderful people that had the same goals as she does. She hopes to go to a one week Summit at UBC in the summer.

Simran and Sadie decided that the Me to We Club should do some individual fundraising over spring break. We only need $1300 more to reach our goal of building a school in India. Each of us needs to raise at least $40 and then we will have completed our goal. Once we finish building the school, we will supply it with books, computers, pencils, paper and other school supplies they might need.

Radio Station

On Friday, February, 25th, 2011, Simran Gillar, Ravneet Dulai, Harmen Parmar and Monica Kumar from the Me to We club went to Red FM 93.1 Studio in Surrey. Harjinder Thind interviewed us on the radio about our big international project for building a school in the Udaipur District, Rajasthan Region, India. While we were on the radio we were very nervous, but very excited as well. We also got a chance to talk in Punjabi. Right after we finished talking we got a phone call at the school for a donation of $100. We are now waiting  to see if we get anymore donations. If you would like to donate to our project please bring your cheques to the office of Pierre Elliott Trudeau. We only need $1500 more to reach our goal!

Rotary Club

On Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011, Pritha Saha, Izaac Stevens, Alisha Manj, and Sadie Larter from the Me to We club went to do a presentation for the Fraserview Rotary Club. We went there to talk about the school we are building in the Undaipur District of Rajasthan in India. Mr. Claire, the Chair of the Fraserview Rotary club was very happy to see how kids like us were trying to make a difference in the world. A few weeks after the presentation Mr. Claire just emailed us and said that they would like to donate $1000. Mr. Claire presented a cheque at our meeting on March 4th. He said that this was one of the larger donations they have made. He also brought his son Ethan, his father Sucha Claire and another member Kuldeep Tatla. Mr. Claire made a speech and we took some pictures. We were happy to receive the money and it helped us get closer to reaching our goal.
